Pyrana vs ServiceNow
ServiceNow puts AI agents, Otto, and AI Control Tower on its own workflow platform. Pyrana builds governed agentic applications across systems. How to choose.
Eric Tarnowski · Co-founder and President, Pyrana · Last reviewed October 12, 2026
The short answer
ServiceNow builds AI agents into its own workflow platform: AI Agent Studio to create them, AI Agent Orchestrator to coordinate them, Otto as the unified assistant, and AI Control Tower to govern AI across the enterprise. Pyrana is an agentic application platform that sits across systems, with one identity, one authorization model, and one audit record for every call. Choose ServiceNow when the work runs through IT, HR, or customer service workflows on ServiceNow. Choose Pyrana when the application spans finance, data platforms, and other systems, and approvals must bind to exact actions.
ServiceNow is a workflow platform and system of action with agents and AI governance built in. Pyrana is an application platform that works across systems, ServiceNow included.
Choose ServiceNow when
- The work already runs through ServiceNow: incidents, requests, HR cases, customer service, or security operations.
- You want agents that use existing ServiceNow flows, catalogs, playbooks, and approvals, configured by your ServiceNow team.
- You want an inventory and risk view of AI across clouds and vendors, and AI Control Tower's discovery and governance fit that need.
- Employees should have one assistant (Otto) that routes requests to the right agent across departments.
- AI capacity bundled into your ServiceNow packages suits your procurement better than a separate platform.
Choose Pyrana when
- The application spans systems outside ServiceNow (ERP, warehouses, document stores) and the business owner is finance, operations, or compliance.
- Consequential actions must queue to a named approval lane with the exact arguments frozen and revalidated before dispatch.
- The deliverable is a full business application with declared pages, a copilot, and versioned outputs people review and revise.
- The platform must run in a dedicated private tenant or in your own cloud infrastructure, with your own model keys.
- Agents need curated policy knowledge with content-addressed citations for every run.

Architecture
ServiceNow builds agents into its own workflow platform. Agents run on ServiceNow instances and act through the platform's flows, playbooks, catalogs, and approvals, which ServiceNow calls its system of action. Pyrana is an application platform that sits across systems. It owns identity, authorization, approvals, audit, and durable storage for each application, and reaches every system of record, ServiceNow included, through governed tool sources.
What ServiceNow is designed for
ServiceNow's agent stack has several named parts. AI Agent Studio is where teams create agents and agentic workflows, set guardrails, and test them. AI Agent Orchestrator coordinates teams of agents toward a goal. ServiceNow Otto, introduced on May 5, 2026, combines the capabilities of Now Assist, Moveworks, and AI Experience into one assistant that routes a request to the right agent. AI Control Tower governs AI across the enterprise. Workflow Data Fabric brings outside data in without copying it. For organizations that run IT, HR, and customer service on ServiceNow, agents arrive inside workflows people already use.
What Pyrana is designed for
Pyrana is built once and configured per application. An application is one App configuration plus a frontend experience: declared pages (surfaces), operations (targets), agents, workflows, tool bindings, access profiles, and approval policies. Every call, from a page, the copilot, the API, MCP, a schedule, or an external event, passes the same eight-step gate before it runs. The typical Pyrana application, such as financial close, collections, or procurement, draws on several systems at once.
Context and knowledge
ServiceNow grounds agents in platform data, enterprise search across documents, wikis, databases, and SharePoint through Otto, and external data through Workflow Data Fabric. In May 2026 it also announced a Context Engine for a real-time view of the enterprise. Pyrana grounds agents in cortIQ, which stores company knowledge as typed, classified, evidence-backed Context Units and accounts for what each run retrieved, injected, and cited.
How external data reaches the agent
Workflow Data Fabric's Zero Copy connectors expose external tables (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, Oracle, and ERP sources such as SAP and Workday) as virtual data fabric tables, queried live from the instance's data center. Pyrana does not need to store source data either. Agents query live through tool sources (ODBC, REST, MCP, Databricks, Snowflake, Drive, OneDrive), and tools are specific to the job: the agent passes the entity and the period, and the tool holds the query. The user's own principal passes through to Snowflake and Databricks, so warehouse row-level security applies to the same person.
Policy knowledge
cortIQ is built for the rules an agent applies. Each Context Unit carries a claim, its evidence passage with source and location, a knowledge type, a classification that governs how it may change, and a content-hash identity. Regulated units wait for a person before they change; absolute units never change automatically. Citations are content-addressed, so the exact business context behind any output is provable.
Agent capabilities
AI Agent Studio provides a natural-language setup for agents and their tools, a testing view that shows the agent conversation, the orchestrator, and the chain of logic, and an agentic evaluation tool that scores agents against historical records. AI Agent Orchestrator coordinates multiple agents. Pyrana agents are configured in plain language, belong to an App, and run inside durable workflows that fan out to specialized agents per entity and group.
Long-running work
ServiceNow agents run inside the platform's workflows and flows. In Pyrana, the Harness runs workflows on Temporal workers: one workflow dispatches many specialized agents in parallel, each reading what siblings and prior runs published and publishing versioned resources back to the App. A run that waits for an approval survives a restart or deploy and resumes.
Models
ServiceNow community documentation describes a default orchestrator model that can be configured to use others, including NowLLM, Claude, and Gemini. Pyrana assigns a model per agent through adapters for Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Anthropic, Fireworks, Google Gemini, and others, with the client's own keys, and does not switch models mid-run.
Governed actions and approvals
ServiceNow provides supervised mode: a tool can be set to require human approval before it runs, and the AI agent action in Workflow Studio runs autonomous or supervised, with a named user reviewing the agent's work. ServiceNow also announced Intelligent Approvals as generally available in May 2026. Pyrana binds approval to the tool call: a policy over typed arguments decides which invocations need a person and freezes the exact operation until a named lane decides.
Does ServiceNow have human in the loop?
Yes, and it sits on top of a mature approvals engine. In the documented example, a flow runs an agent in supervised mode, pauses, and resumes once the reviewer approves the output in the Now Assist panel. Supervised or autonomous is chosen per tool or per flow action. For approvals over ServiceNow records and catalog items, this is a strong fit.
What Pyrana adds to the approval
Pyrana's policy is evaluated over typed arguments: thresholds, membership, existence, and compound rules. When an invocation trips it, the platform freezes the operation, exact arguments, scope, and evidence under a hash and queues it to a named lane. Reviewer eligibility is checked at decision time, the frozen invocation is revalidated before dispatch, and dispatch is idempotent, so a retry reuses the receipt. The same policy applies whether the call came from a page, the copilot, a workflow, or an outside agent over MCP.
Building the application
On ServiceNow, agents extend applications and workflows built on the ServiceNow platform, and the April 2026 announcement describes every custom app and agent as governed by AI Control Tower. On Pyrana, the application is the deliverable: one App configuration and a frontend experience, with identity, storage, orchestration, approvals, audit, and the copilot supplied by the platform.
Where outputs go
ServiceNow outputs land in ServiceNow records and in the systems its flows reach. Pyrana outputs are resources: versioned, immutable, and attributed. Publishing against a stale version is refused, never overwritten. A person can ask the copilot for a personal page, which is compiled without network or storage access and renders every read with the person's own authorization.
Governance and security
AI Control Tower is ServiceNow's governance answer, and in May 2026 it expanded to discover, observe, govern, secure, and measure AI across ServiceNow and other platforms, with an AI Gateway for MCP traffic that ServiceNow lists as generally available in September 2026. Pyrana governs the application: one authorization check on every call, layered by tenant, App membership, access profile, and scope entitlement, with the audit record written before execution.
Control plane or application platform
AI Control Tower inventories AI assets across clouds, maps permissions for human and non-human identities through Veza, and can stop an agent that acts outside its permissions. That is a broad view across many systems. Pyrana works at a different layer: the people and agents inside one application share one permission model, one knowledge base, and one audit record. In Pyrana, unauthorized things read as absent rather than denied, and reading a record and approving a change are separate permissions. Pyrana's view is that a control plane and an application platform answer different questions, and many enterprises will run both.
Action Fabric and outside agents
ServiceNow Action Fabric, announced on May 5, 2026, exposes flows, playbooks, approvals, and catalogs to any agent through an MCP Server that is generally available and included in every Now Assist and AI Native SKU. Pyrana's App MCP server does the equivalent for an App's targets: any agent can work with the App as the user, through the same gate.
Operations
ServiceNow provides AI Agent Studio analytics, agentic evaluation, and runtime observability through AI Control Tower. Pyrana captures every run's traces, tokens, and tool errors as JSON through the administrative API, and its eval pipeline runs deterministic checks first, then an LLM-as-judge stage in Agent Studio. Push compiles an immutable App version; activation is audited, requires an App owner, and rollback is an activation of a prior version.
Cost structure
ServiceNow includes AI in its packages. On April 9, 2026 it announced a tiered offer model spanning AI assistance, agentic automation, and autonomous operations; community guides describe usage counted in assists, with allocations rising by tier and no published per-assist price. Pyrana is enterprise platform pricing plus implementation, with no per-action meter on the platform.
Time to first application depends on where the work lives. If it already runs on ServiceNow, an agent can extend an existing flow. In Pyrana, with clean data available, an application typically takes about a week to stand up, and the frontend experience is the main effort. A first engagement, including SSO, access profiles, the approval policy, and loading the policy library into cortIQ, runs about six weeks.
What it takes to ship the same application
Reference application: an approval-gated procurement request. A person or agent drafts a purchase request; amounts above a threshold need a finance approver; the request waits durably for the decision; everything is recorded. Assume the purchase is posted to an ERP.
| Component | On ServiceNow | On Pyrana |
|---|---|---|
| Request record and UI | ServiceNow catalog item or custom table and its forms; team configures them | Declared surface and target in the App configuration; frontend experience built on the App shell |
| Drafting agent | AI Agent Studio agent with tools over the request | Agent configured in plain language, bound to the procurement tools |
| ERP data | Zero Copy for ERP or an integration; team configures and secures it | ERP as a tool source (REST, ODBC, or MCP) with a scoped binding per agent |
| Threshold rule | Flow condition or approval rule; team writes it | Tool approval policy over the typed amount argument |
| Finance approver | ServiceNow approval to a user or group; supervised mode for agent tools | Named approval lane; eligibility checked at decision time |
| Durable wait | Flow waits for the approval record | Temporal workflow suspends and resumes; survives restart or deploy |
| Binding approval to the exact action | Team designs how the approved record maps to the ERP write | Frozen invocation under a hash, revalidated before idempotent dispatch |
| Audit | ServiceNow record history and AI Control Tower logs; ERP side logged separately | One execution row and audit record per call, written before dispatch |
| Policy knowledge | Knowledge articles and enterprise search | Procurement policy as Context Units in cortIQ, cited per run |
ServiceNow supplies a great deal of this out of the box, especially the approval engine. The team's work grows with each system outside ServiceNow.
Using them together
Most large enterprises that consider Pyrana already run ServiceNow. The two connect cleanly. A Pyrana agent can call ServiceNow as a tool source, through REST APIs or the Action Fabric MCP Server, so an approved step in a Pyrana App can open a request, update an incident, or run a ServiceNow flow. A ServiceNow agent can call a Pyrana target through the App MCP server or API, and the call passes Pyrana's gate as the user or service principal. A practical split: IT, HR, and employee service stay on ServiceNow; cross-system applications such as financial close, collections, or compliance review run on Pyrana and hand tickets to ServiceNow where a service process takes over.
When not to choose Pyrana
- The work is IT, HR, customer service, or security operations, and it already runs on ServiceNow.
- Your ServiceNow team can build the agent in AI Agent Studio over existing flows, catalogs, and approvals.
- The main need is an enterprise inventory and risk view of AI across clouds, which AI Control Tower is designed to provide.
- You want one employee assistant across departments, and Otto's routing fits that.
- AI bundled into existing ServiceNow packages is simpler to procure than a new platform.
